DJ/artist Genius, who built his name and career in Atlanta, is releasing a 45-track “Gucci’s Home” mix, dedicated to the trap king’s return. Debuted by XXL, the mix features both hits and deep cuts from Guwop’s catalogue and is the fifth installment of Genius‘ Slumchat mixtape series. “When I moved from Jamaica to East Atlanta, Gucci helped me adapt to Atlanta rap culture and lifestyle through his music,” says Genius. “Now that Gucci is free it marks the return of one of the most respected & celebrated ATL living legends.”
Genius has played a big part in the rise of Atlanta’s rap scene. Currently K. Camp’s DJ, he has hosted Migos‘ first two mixtapes and slept on studio floors alongside 2 Chainz, Travis Porter, Scotty ATL, and more in the early days. Immigrating to Atlanta at the age of 13, Genius grew up idolizing the DJ’s, or “selectors,” in his home country of Jamaica and decided that he wanted to learn the craft to the very best he could. Blown away by the technology available in the US, Genius quickly taught himself programs and became the plug for selling mix CD’s in high school, blending current hits with his reggae collection. Selling mixes turned into throwing parties for big money in college, where he brought Drake and Nicki Minaj to Georgia State University. Promoting gave way to hosting mixtapes and hanging out at studios, to eventually breaking records in clubs.
Now, the polymath is making a name for himself by releasing his own mixes and music, gearing up for the release of A Eastside Story: Deluxe Edition, a collaborative project with rapper Felipe. VIBE debuted the K. Camp and Que-assisted “Movie 2.0“ single earlier this month, while earlier this week HipHopDX shared the “Make It Work“ video. The project includes features from Hoodrich Pablo Juan, Mr. 2-17, K-Noe, Rich Espy, T-Hood, Coca Vango, Scotty ATL, and Two-9. Stay tuned for Genius’ A Eastside Story: Deluxe Edition, out this June.
